Message from the Cleveland Youth Baseball & Softball Board of Directors 4/20/20

Good Morning,

I hope you and your families are all staying safe and healthy.  It's hard to believe that this week was planned to be the start of games for many of the teams in our program.  The excitement of Opening Day, and the optimism associated with such, makes it one of my favorite days of they year.  Although softball and baseball are very secondary in priorities at present, one of the things I'm looking forward to most is seeing the all of the kids of our community take the field for the first time repping the "C" across all ages and levels.

As noted in my earlier message to our community, as this is a developing situation, we are closely monitoring state and local updates and recommendations. Portland Parks & Rec made an announcement on Saturday that their fields will be closed through June 6th.  This extension of field closure past June 1 ends the opportunity for our program to play the regular Spring 2020 season.

While this is disappointng news, we wholeheartedly support these directives to keep our community and front line workers safe. We want to assure you that it also does not change our organizaton's goal to provide the kids of our community the opportunity to play ball once that is an option again.

As part of that commitment, the board has begun the process of investigating the opportunity for a summer season (it always was a bummer that we stopped playing when the good weather showed up anyway). There have been discussions initiated with CCJBA (our county association for baseball), as well as other communities that share our interest in creating a potential summer option for this year. Internally we are committed to providing options for our T-Ball, Farm Ball and CNL players if there is enough interest.

Our committment to create a summer season only matters if you, and your kids, are interested in playing ball this summer.  In order to understand how we should proceed, we are asking that you fill out a form by using the link at the bottom of this email for each of the players you registered no later than Tuesday 4/21 at 11:59 pm. There are three listed options:

  • Interested in playing summer ball

    • This is our preferred option!  We do want to note that, depending upon the number of folks who choose the other options, we may need to alter some things to make this possible.  This could include tweaks to rosters, level of competition, etc. More details will be emailed going forward to those who select this option. If this ends up not being possible, either of the two below options will also be offered to everyone in this group.

  • Not interested in playing summer ball - donate registration fee

    • If you are not able to play in a summer league, but would like to help the program sustain for future seasons, please choose this option.  We are a 501(c)(3)) non-profit and will provide you with documention that you made this donation with no goods or services rendered.  Note that within the CARES Act there is a $300 special charitable donation deduction allowed, even if you don't itemize (Please confirm with your accountant/tax preparer)

  • Not interested in playing summer ball - request partial refund

    • If you are not interested in playing summer ball, or donating your fees, we are offering a partial refund of your fees.  As mentioned above, we have made numerous investments in order to prepare for the Spring 2020 season, many of which we will not be reimbursed.  We will be better able to specify the amount and timing of partial refunds following receipt of these responses. Please note this will take time to process.

It's important that everyone understand that partial refunds are all that are available going forward. While practice may begin in April, preparations for the season start long before that. Although we halted spending once mandates were announced, the league per usual had already  made significant investments in this season that provided value to all levels, including:  field improvements, new equipment, uniforms, field permits, association fees, and facility rentals among others.

Please note that if you do choose a partial refund, it will be some time before refunds are processed.

I hope our optimism meets reality and we get the Opening Day we're all in need of this year. Thank you all for being a part of our community.

We are in this together. For those of you who are health care providers or providers of essential services, thank you all.

Go Warriors!

Message from the Cleveland Youth Baseball & Softball Board of Directors

Dear Cleveland Youth Baseball & Softball community:

The safety and well-being of our youth are always our highest priority. In light of current events regarding Covid-19 (Coronavirus), we wanted to reach out to let you know we are closely monitoring this rapidly evolving process. While we are all eagerly looking forward to the start of our seasons, our first priority is the health and safety of our baseball and softball communities.

As a league we are following recommendations made by Portland Public Schools as well as our county organizations including CCJBA (Clackamas County Junior Baseball Association), CCGSA (Clackamas County Girls Softball Association), local health organizations and recent state mandates.

As of today, all practices scheduled prior to April 29th are cancelled – this includes ad-hoc practices and any gatherings of our youth and coaches on the fields.

We will continue to communicate plans for practices after April 29th as the situation evolves.

We want to remind families of the importance of handwashing, social distancing and staying home if you are feeling symptomatic. Please stay safe and healthy.
